This article revisits Brazilian educational legislation concerning the High School and discusses the limits imposed on its integration with professional education. It reviews Brazilian Curricular Standards regarding the High School and discusses the importance of work and citizenship, at the same time focussing on the concepts of interdisciplinary problems and its contexts. It concludes that the consolidation of the High School as one of the phases of basic education should not only preserve the elements of a basic formation, but go beyond its purposes so as to include the multiple social, cultural and economic necessities of the individual, one of which is a professional education.
