Modernização, Ciência e Tecnologia na "Universidade do Terceiro Milênio": Perspectivas para o Desenvolvimento Regional

Abstract

This article examines the concept of public university put forward by Darcy Ribeiro with the creation of the Northern Rio de Janeiro State University, which was born under the controversial sign of the spokesperson of the emerging civilization and the cradle of autonomous thinking to accelerate regional development. In order to achieve this, the very paradoxes of the relationship between technology, modernization, and cultural autonomy were faced. They also require a new response to theoretical and epistemological dilemmas. The article defends the view that a transformational project can not be thought out in isolation from the daily struggles between governments, scientists, businesspeople, and workers.
